Santa Barbara Symphony Members Perform Live at Maravilla

A quartet of Santa Barbara Symphony musicians played three pieces at various locations across the Maravilla campus.

On Sunday, August 9th, members of the Santa Barbara Symphony, lead by our maestro Nir Kabaretti, presented a special performance for the residents of the Maravialla retirement community.

The Symphony’s string quartet was comprised of Violinists Steven Zander and Yue Deng, Diane Gilbert (Viola), and Jonathan Flaksman (cello). The quartet performed three times throughout the afternoon (approximately 35 minute-long segments) at various locations across Maravilla’s campus, with socially-distanced, limited seating. Residents were able to watch and listen from the comfort of their own patios/balconies and in safe locations on the grounds.

“I love the Symphony so much and I’ve missed the music,” said one resident.

The setlist included music by Puccini, Gershwin, and the Beatles. Reiterating the joy the musicians felt at coming together on a Sunday afternoon, violinist Jonahtan Flaksman said, “This is the first time I’ve performed live with my fellow musicians since March. It’s so great to play together again.”

“For 67 years, the Symphony has been inspiring our community through powerful musical experiences. We have been there for our community when they’ve needed us most – and now is one of those times. As you can imagine, the Symphony misses our audiences, and they miss us too! This is a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with them in a safe and new way, and share the music we love.” shared Nir Kabaretti, Music and Artistic Director of the Santa Barbara Symphony.
