What Heritage Society Members Have to Say

Both raised in musical families and Jane a flutist herself, we share a lifelong love of classical music! We moved to Santa Barbara in the 1970s as a young married couple on a tight budget and have been season subscribers ever since, moving over the decades from the rear balcony seats at the Arlington Theater to premier left orchestra seats at the Granada. Even while raising a family, Saturday nights at the Symphony were our “date nights” and one of the only interesting things to do in town in the ’70 and ‘80s. We have developed many personal friends and close connections with key Symphony people over the years, including warm friendships with Maestro Nir Kabaretti and his family.

After over 50 years of delighting in the Symphony’s innovative programming, we have recently decided to include the Symphony in our estate plans, only asking ourselves why we waited so long? We believe strongly in how important the Symphony is to the community, and especially the next generation of musicians and music lovers through its youth programs. We invite others to join us as Heritage Society members to help sustain the Symphony for another 50 years!

My love of classical music began as a child when my Mozart-loving father had music streaming throughout the house.  I sang in the church choir from age 10 through high school, and enjoyed school trips to the Metropolitan Opera and the New York Philharmonic.  Later in my career, I worked as a fundraising consultant with Bay Area nonprofits, including the Philharmonic Baroque Orchestra, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the California Symphony.  After my husband and I moved to Santa Barbara in 1995, I eventually joined the Santa Barbara Symphony board. I immediately joined the Heritage Society because I thought it was the right thing to do to guarantee the Symphony’s financial stability.  I’m delighted to serve on the Symphony Board at this time of terrific forward momentum and am especially enthusiastic about the Symphony’s youth programs.  I want to ensure that the Symphony continues to enrich the lives of so many of all ages for years to come.  You too can help the Santa Barbara Symphony continue to provide amazing music and exceptional youth education for generations to come by joining the Heritage Society today!

After serving as the Symphony’s Marketing Director for 28 years, the Santa Barbara Symphony remains close to my heart even in my retirement! Paul  and I never miss a concert or a symphony event even to this day. It’s very  important to me to keep symphonic music alive for future generations.  Through my current gifts and legacy provisions in my estate plan, it gives  me great personal satisfaction to know the Santa Barbara Symphony will live on. I have included this special organization in my estate plans in two ways: a bequest of a percentage of my estate, and a life insurance policy which names the Symphony as the sole beneficiary. I enjoy the benefits of being both a Crescendo Society and a Heritage Society member, and I invite you to join me!

Our family has a deep appreciation for the enormously positive impact the  Symphony’s Music Van, Concerts for Young People and especially the Youth Symphony have had on my wife and me, when we were members many years ago, and on our three children, who continue to play viola, cello and bass, even as adults now. That is why we have included a bequest for the  Symphony in our estate plans, to help secure the future of the Symphony and the educational programs that have so enriched our own family.
