Concerts for Young People

A Program of the Santa Barbara Symphony in partnership with Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute

The Santa Barbara Symphony is delighted to partner with the national program of Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute for this season’s 2019-2020 Concerts for Young People.  We know that playing together builds community, so through the help of Carnegie’s Link Up program, we will transform CYP into an interactive concert experience. Students are invited, at their seats, to sing or play along with the Santa Barbara Symphony. This year’s concert, The Orchestra Sings, focuses on the musical concept of melody.

As in years past, the Symphony  is pleased to bring this program to students in 4th through 6th grade across Santa Barbara County. The concert is provided at no cost to participating schools, with each school responsible for providing its own transportation.

Are you a teacher in Santa Barbara County interested in bringing your 4th-6th grade students?

The Santa Barbara Symphony is excited to announce that registration is now open for this season’s interactive Concerts for Young People Program!  Click on the link below to sign up now! All 4 concerts are filled on a first come, first served basis.

Concert length: approximately 45 minutes

Location: Granada Theatre (1214 State Street, Santa Barbara, CA 93101) in downtown Santa Barbara

Dates and Times: The 2019-2020 concerts will take place on EITHER THURSDAY JANUARY 16, 2020 AT 9:45 am or 11:15 am OR FRIDAY JANUARY 17, 2020 AT 9:45 am or 11:15 am.

The Santa Barbara Symphony’s Music Van

The Santa Barbara Symphony’s Music Van, generously donated by Marilynn and Tom Sullivan, has been in operation since 1978. The Music Van is a mobile music classroom filled with orchestral instruments, which were kindly donated by Nick Rail Music. It makes annual visits to 3rd grade classrooms in the greater Santa Barbara area from September through December. The Music Van serves about 2,000 students in more than 40 schools each year. For many kids, the Music Van provides the first opportunity for them to see, hear and “play” a real musical instrument.

Music Van docents conduct a one-hour session with students. During the first half hour, students are introduced to the orchestra, conductor, and the instruments. A CD is used to demonstrate the sound of each instrument and a professional musician accompanies the docents to demonstrate an instrument group (strings, woodwinds, brass, or percussion). The students are able to try out all the instruments during the second half hour, and this is the most fun part for them! There are usually two one-hour sessions at a school, and the teachers LOVE the program!

Registration

Registration for the 2018 Music Van season is now open to schools in Santa Barbara County!  Please fill out the online application to sign up.

Make a Donation to the Music Van

Any money donated will be used to purchase equipment for the Music Van. Make checks payable to Santa Barbara Symphony with “Music Van” in the memo line. Checks can be mailed to Santa Barbara Symphony, Attn: Music Van, 1330 State St., Ste 102, Santa Barbara, CA 93101.

There is something magical about seeing a child hold and “play” an instrument for the first time. Many of these children are then inspired to take music lessons and participate in musical experiences for the rest of their lives. Thank you for supporting the Music Van and helping to enrich the education of our children.

Elementary School Programming

Elementary School Programming is the beginning of the Music Education Center trajectory. The programs provide free weekly lessons and instruments to approximately 140 young musicians. The lessons occur in groups of 3-6 students and are divided into levels. This program gives musical training to many students that would not have otherwise considered taking up an instrument. The Music Education Center works with the school districts to guide and ensure that a need is met that cannot be filled by district funding. It is the goal of the Elementary School Programming that students will join the Santa Barbara Junior Orchestra and begin to move through the Music Education Center continuum.

  • BRAVO! program in Santa Barbara Unified School District

The Music Education Center began working with the Santa Barbara Unified School District in 2016 in administering the BRAVO! after-school music program. This district-wide program provides free weekly afterschool music instruction to approximately 260 SBUSD students in 4th, 5th and 6th grades.
